The park is divided into three districts: the Island in the Sky, Needles, and The Maze. For the best views of the park and the easiest access from Moab Utah, visit the Island In The Sky. An easy drive through the park will lead you through an array of spectacular viewpoints, some of the best in Moab Utah, and to a number of easier hikes such as the Mesa Arch trail or the Aztec Butte trail. If you are looking for something more challenging check out the Upheaval Dome trail for a spectacular example of what scientists believe was a meteor impact site. If you are looking for more of an adventure the Needles district should be your destination. The Needles District of Canyonlands National Park is located 2 hours south of Moab, but it’s worth a visit – it offers some of the best and more remote trails in the Moab Utah area. Check out the Peekaboo trail where you will be traveling through a maze of sandstone fins with many opportunities to hide from your hiking partner and then jump out and say “peekaboo”! The Maze district is the most remote area of the Canyonlands National Park and is not as easily accessible from Moab Utah. It requires a long drive to reach it and is extremely remote. It was a favorite hang out spot for the famous outlaws of the Wild West including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Go there is you are looking to get away from it all, but only if you are equipped for such an adventure. A satellite communication system is a must is Moab’s more remote country!
